| President's Letter |
This has been a great year for the Young
Professionals. Our seminars and networking events have allowed many students to
see how the business world works and interact in a professional environment.
These events have also allowed businesspeople and community activists to learn
of the concerns of the youths who will be Long Island's future leaders... if we
can prepare and convince them to pursue their careers on Long Island.
The second Entrepreneurial Workshop was another
powerful experience. Facilitated by Bill Barrett (the course creator) and
myself, ten students over five summer weeks had the opportunity to explore the
inner workings of business creation and operation. This year's class was
particularly interesting since many of the participants had already started a
business of some sort, and leveraged their experience to gain a much deeper
understanding of entrepreneurship. Their accomplishments in the workshop were
documented in an extensive article in the New York
Times.
I have been particularly impressed by
how well high schoolers, college students and business people have worked
together on our committees. Once such committee has planned our upcoming
business competition. Students who usually participate in similar competitions
have taken the lead and written the criteria for ours. Our involved
businesspeople then worked with them to bring industry concerns into the
equation. This truly shows how well Long Islanders of all generations can work
together to build a challenging and rewarding business environment that will
invigorate the Island's youngest professionals.
I
would like to thank all of our members and supporters who have done much to
help us over the past year. Linda Mitchell, our Executive Director, has worked
tirelessly to make this organization what it is. Ron Lazar, our Chairman, has
provided us with the support and counsel that has guided the YPCC so well.
Finally, Dennis Sneden and the Chamber of Commerce staff have given our group
the backbone to pull off everything we did.
If
you're not already a member, please contact Linda or myself to join and get
involved in one of our committees. If you're already a part of the YPCC, please
bring a friend or associate with you to our next meeting.
Happy New Year!
