Exploring Business,
Academia and Government
The Young Professionals Chamber of Commerce has
had three terrific meetings in the last three months. On Monday December 22nd
the group met at Huntington Honda and Fran Lomenzo, General Sales Manager, gave
a great presentation on buying or leasing a car, as well as what it takes to be
a great salesman. However, the students learned it takes more than just
salesmen to run this, the largest Honda dealership in the tri-state area. From
the sales department to the accounting department to the service department,
everyone is an integral part of this and any large corporation.
On
Wednesday January 21st Huntington Town Hall hosted the monthly meeting. Don
McKay, Public Information Officer, introduced the students to what town and
local government does in the community. The many topics discussed included
parks and recreation, snow removal, town codes and enforcement, environmental
control, planning and zoning for shopping centers, just to name a few. Most
interesting was a discussion for a breakdown of a group of strip stores to
become a super-sized supermarket and all that it entails, including traffic
control for tractor trailer deliveries and neighborhood resident's objections
to the project and how it will effect the environment!
Dr. Stuart
Rosenberg, Ph.D. School of Business, from Dowling College presented a very
informative session on College Majors and what to look for when choosing a
college or university at the February 24th meeting. Dr. Rosenberg spoke about
what it's like to live away from home for the first time and the advantages of
going to school locally. He stressed how important it is to get involved
socially in clubs, organizations or sports. He discussed financial aspects and
the many scholarships available to students. The importance of internships and
working in a professional environment will certainly pave the way when it comes
to landing a job in the career field of your choice. |
